Welcome to the LSI Analytics Series - Day 2

Hey Coach,

We all know softball isn’t just a game — it’s a puzzle we’re always trying to solve. Every pitch, every swing, every matchup tells a story. Over the next three days, we’re diving into how softball analytics and AI can help you see that story clearer than ever. This isn’t about replacing your gut — it’s about giving it better information.

Each post will tackle a different part of the analytics game:

Day 2: Finding the Truth in the Numbers — Making Data Work for You

Hey Coach,

We all have that one player who looks great in the stat sheet — .420 average, tons of hits — but struggles against certain pitchers. Why? The traditional stats don’t tell the whole story.

Here’s where deeper analytics come in. Take expected batting average (xBA) — it factors in exit velocity and launch angle to show how often a batted ball should be a hit.
Example:

  • A player with a .420 average but a .290 xBA? Getting lucky or facing weak pitching.

  • A player hitting .270 with a .380 xBA? Hitting the ball hard but straight at defenders — a breakout waiting to happen.

LSI will bring those insights into one place — pairing video, spray charts, and data so you can see the why behind the stats. You’ll know which hitters handle riseballs with high spin, which pitchers induce the most soft contact, and where your team’s offensive plan needs to shift.

It’s not about collecting more data — it’s about asking better questions:

  • “Why is this hitter’s line drive rate down 5% this month?”

  • “Do we chase more offspeed pitches in 2-strike counts?”

  • “Which pitch type generates the highest swing-and-miss rate?”

That’s the kind of thinking that separates good teams from championship teams.
